As Covid restrictions are finally starting to lift thanks to the vaccine (that’s not to say you shouldn’t still be careful), a lot of people will be going on vacation for spring break. A very popular destination is sure to be the beach, but that brings with it a very specific risk: sunburn. It’s extremely easy to sunburn while enjoying the sun, sand, and water, so this article will give you some tips on how to avoid turning yourself into a lobster.

  1. Wear sunscreen! This is perhaps the most obvious item on this list, but it needs to be mentioned. Sunscreen is extremely important in blocking the sun’s harmful rays. If you are at the beach, you need to wear it whether it’s sunny or cloudy, as you can burn in either conditions. Be sure to do some research on what spf and brand is best for your skin!
  2. Reapply sunscreen! Forgetting to reapply your sunscreen after you get out of the water is a huge cause of sunburn. Saltwater is an exfoliant, so it can take sunscreen off in seconds, even if it’s supposed to be water resistant. Remember to reapply as soon as you dry off after swimming!
  3. Apply sunscreen on ANY skin that is exposed to the sun! It may not be obvious, but you can sunburn on your scalp or on the tops of your feet just as easily as you can your shoulders or nose. Make sure you apply sunscreen to your feet, your hairline, and your hair part to avoid burning!
  4. Wear sun-protective clothes! If you don’t want to spend a ton of time reapplying sunscreen, a great alternative is shirts or hats with spf! These will protect you without the added time of rubbing in sunscreen. However, make sure your items have spf. You can actually burn through a normal t-shirt, believe it or not.
  5. Spend some time in the shade! If you spend all your time in the sun, you may burn no matter how careful you are. Your best bet to stay safe is to take periodical brakes under a beach tent or umbrella. Make sure these items also have spf!

The beach can be a lot of fun, but you do have to be careful, because the sun can cause a lot of damage. Besides sunburn, it also accelerates aging and can potentially cause skin cancer. So, have fun, stay hydrated, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
