OMHS Places in Top Ten at YMCA’s Mock Trial

Last weekend, several Oak Mountain students went to Montgomery to compete in the YMCA’s Mock Trial competition. A mock trial is a replica of a court trial, minus the fact that it is not a real case. All three teams did very well and learned much about trial procedures and witness testimony. The case this year included a charge of possession and distribution of a controlled substance by a high school student and a counter charge of entrapment by an undercover narcotics officer.

The Major League team, including Lisa Guraya (captain), Matthew Tindal, Rachel Knowles, Sarah Dayhood, Terry Choi, Wesley Monnette, made it to the top 10 teams out of 57 across the state. Rachel Knowles was recognized as the top defense attorney.

The two Premier League teams put up quite a fight and did an outstanding job. One team included Cameron Giordano (captain), James Fontenot, Luke Rakers, and Marquis Smith, Meghan Liskey, and Su Kim. The other Premier League team was Laurel Reeves (captain), Hayden McDaniel, Amelia Walley, Gabby Gunn, Carley Tramble, and Grace Choi. Gabby Gunn was recognized as top witness. Both Rachel Knowles and Gabby Gunn’s accomplishments are outstanding considering neither had ever competed on a mock trial team before.

Congratulations to all of the Oak Mountain students and their achievements last weekend!
