1st Annual Sadie Hawkins Dance Coming to OMHS

On February 1st, the first annual Sadie Hawkins Dance is taking place, themed the “Bow Tie Bash”. What differentiates this dance from others is the unique idea that the girls ask the guys to escort them. How did this idea come about?

In the early 1900s, a comic strip was released on “The Homiest Gal in all Them Hills”, none other than Sadie Hawkins. In this strip, a day in November was designated for unmarried women to find bachelors around town hoping to catch them for marriage. This was Sadie Hawkins’ favorite day, and the comic’s popularity infested minds on the idea of “girls ask guys”.

At OMHS, the girls had to come up with creative ways to ask the guys to be their dates. One sophomore, Tiffany Y, asked sophomore, Jake G, by writing a poster when the stars were out that said, “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish you may, I wish you might, be my date on Sadie’s night” on a poster decorated with Starburst. “I’m excited because this is my first school dance and I get to see what it’s like!”

The attire is semi-formal and similar to homecoming, between tuxedos and jeans for guys and Sunday best for girls. This includes boutonnieres and corsages. The actual dance will be held Saturday, February 1st, from 7:30 to 10:30pm in the Cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for sale in the cafeteria up until Friday before the dance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. This dance is hosted by SGA, as a fundraiser for band and choir.

We hope that all attending the Sadie’s dance will have a blast!
