David Alejandro Trujillo Valiño, a Creative Writing student, entered an essay for the MLK Unity Breakfast. This year’s theme for the essay contest was “Never lose hope; Unity wins.”

David wrote about how hope and unity “should not let our differences divide us but rather let our common humanity unite us.” His essay won 3rd place for the Birmingham metro area. The awards ceremony was held at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center (BJCC). Doug Jones was the keynote speaker. David recalled a 9 year old boy that could recited the entire “I Have a Dream” speech.

David’s mother and stepfather attended proudly. David’s essay will be published in media guides.
