Oak Mountain Intermediate Students Study Outstanding Character through the Civil Rights Movement

Cindy Warner, Shelby County Schools Public Relations Supervisor

Fourth grade students at Oak Mountain Intermediate School enjoyed an engaging presentation by Mr. Sam Pugh, Outreach Coordinator for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. This is the second year Mr. Pugh has presented to the OMIS fourth grade class as part of a curriculum format initiated by OMIS teachers. The program is designed to broaden students’ understanding of and appreciation for individuals who exemplified outstanding character traits during the civil rights movement. As they continue their unit of study, students will also visit the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, participate in campus-based activities designed by their teachers, and attend a special presentation by a foot soldier of the civil rights movement.
